Fresh & Homemade Breakfast


Breakfast is a favorite time of day for our guests. Each morning, our innkeepers and staff prepare a chef’s choice menu utilizing fresh ingredients and integrating our own culinary lavender into many of the dishes. Portions are generous to assure that our guests are well-energized for a day of hiking and other activities. We are happy to accommodate our guests’ dietary restrictions as necessary, but please be sure to note any restrictions when making your reservation. A breakfast-to-go is available if you need to depart prior to breakfast.

Start your morning with a “cup of Joe”

George Washington Inn is well-known for its house-roasted premium medium-dark coffee. Using coffee beans that were harvested in the high elevations of Guatemala, the green coffee beans are roasted in five-pound batches in the Diedrich coffee roaster located on the east end of the oceanfront piazza. The roasted beans are fresh-ground and brewed for your morning “cup of George”. (Did you know that coffee was called a “cup of George” before it was called a “cup of Joe”?) If you prefer to start your day with a cup of tea rather than coffee, a variety of eight different herbal and black teas are available.

Fresh Picked favorites

Each morning, breakfast begins with a delicious fruit course along with your choice of juice. We make every effort to use seasonal fruits when available, often sourced within the local area. Some of the favorites include a Fruit & Yogurt Parfait, Brie & Maple Baked Peaches, Orange & Honey Poached Pears, Mixed Fresh Fruit in a House-made Lavender Pizzelle, and a Minty Cold Fruit Soup. Have you ever heard of Watermelon Pizza?

Breakfast Favorites

The fruit course is followed by the main course which varies between sweet and savory dishes. The savory dishes may include a Baked English Omelet, Individual Baked Eggs, Cheese Grits & Sausage (after all, George and Martha were Virginians!), Crustless Quiche, an Oven-roasted Breakfast Hash, or one of many other favorites. Savory dishes are traditionally served with scones, biscuits or muffins.

Sweet & Savory

Some of the favorite sweet dishes served at the George Washington Inn include Sour Cream Waffles with Peaches and Praline Sauce, Skillet French Toast with Berry Rhubarb Sauce, several varieties of Oven-Baked French Toast, and a Fruit-filled Amish Baked Oatmeal. A specialty in the fall is our Pumpkin Pecan Baked oatmeal. These sweet dishes are served with a side of bacon or sausage.

Baked to Perfection

Speaking of scones, biscuits and muffins, all of these breads are made fresh in the Inn’s kitchen. One of the all-time favorites is our Lavender Buttermilk Biscuits served with Lemon Curd Cream or Devonshire Cream, but other well-loved choices are Rhubarb/Cranberry/Pistachio Muffins and Lemon Lavender Blueberry Scones.

Fresh-Baked Daily

Not to be forgotten when talking about food at George Washington Inn are the afternoon cookies. Fresh-baked every day, the Chocolate Chip Cookies are a favorite; but we sometimes break with tradition for some variety. Guests who join us during the Christmas holidays are treated with Eggnog Lavender Shortbread Cookies.
